Squashed: People, Proximity, and Public Space

Thursday, 19th Sep
16.00 - 17.00
As urban populations continue to grow, how can design respond to our ever-increasing proximity to one another? Furniture and fittings in public, semi-public and liminal spaces have to meet specific design requirements, ranging from crowd management and heavy usage, to comfort and aesthetics. What is often overlooked, however, is how people actually interact together in such places – at times requiring distance, closeness, relaxation or workspace.

This panel discussion explores how designers can go about designing for people, proximity, public and semi-public space. How can we make these spaces characterful and functional? And how can furniture, fittings, and way-finding systems shape crowd movement and individual behaviour?

Speakers include Luke Pearson of PearsonLloyd and will be moderated by Disegno’s editor-in-chief Oli Stratford.
